Starting a skincare business is a challenge and fighting climate change is another bigger challenge. Danielle knew that combatting climate change was no easy feat, however she wanted to contribute to the movement in any way she could. With a passion for the environment and activism, her goal was to change the way skincare products were made – and reduce the amount of plastic waste that was associated with them. “I joined zero waste movements and started making my own skincare products at home. The amount of plastic I used decreased exponentially. I knew if I could make a good enough product, I could help to change the skincare industry to something that was sustainable and positively impacted the environment.”
Danielle’s products were made using local, natural, ingredients – and everything was recycled and recyclable. In addition, her products worked wonders, and they quickly became a local sensation. “I would sell my products at farmers markets. Once, someone came in saying they had eczema. I gave her my products to try, and she came back saying it was the only thing that ever worked for her. I was proud, and that is when I knew I had something good.”
FINDING A WORK / LIFE BALANCE THROUGH HER LOAN
Danielle had a strong customer base, but starting a skincare business on her own was taking a large toll on her. “I did everything on my own, it was very labor intensive. It got to a point where I never had a day off. My demand was growing faster than my inventory, and I was overwhelmed with the amount of work that was required. I needed help.” Danielle turned to Ascendus and received an $18,500 loan. “My experience with Ascendus was incredible. My loan consultant was like my business therapist. She understood and helped me implement things even after the loan went through. It was a game changer.”
Through her loan, Danielle hired a part time employee to take over her farmer market sales, started an online marketing campaign, and stocked up on the inventory she needed to meet the demands of her sales. “I am very passionate about what I do, and I can contribute to the climate movement in a way that I love. The Ascendus loan helped me to have a healthier relationship with my passion. Before, I had no days off. Now, I can work more effectively and have an entire weekend off. Thank you, Ascendus.”
